The Nemba washing station is a location for local small-holding farmers to gather their coffees to wash and bundle together for approaching the market. The washing station is located in the northern region of Kayanza, which borders neighboring Rwanda. The whole cherry is brought to Nemba where it is washed and collectively dried. The washing station itself is at 1800 masl, and some farmers are topped out at 2000! This lot is made up of the fruit of older bourbon trees, the original variety that was brought to Burundi in the 1930's by Catholic monks.
The Nemba Station has been around since the 1990's and this year was in the top 10 for the national competion of coffee in Burundi (the Cup of Excellence). The quality of sorting stands out as well!
